A recent study of the effectiveness of sildenafil citrate (Viagra®) was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, which included a comparison of the effects of sildenafil citrate on men with erectile dysfunction and compared it to the effects of sildenafil citrate in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or pulmonary arterial hypertension.
The study authors, Drs. Nachumika Uchiyu, from the Department of Urology at Keck School of Medicine, and Dr. Yipin Wang, from the Department of Urology at Keck School of Medicine at Northwestern University, reported on the efficacy of sildenafil citrate (Viagra®) and the results of a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized crossover study, in men with erectile dysfunction who were evaluated for the presence of BPH or pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).
Efficacy was assessed using the change in International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) total score from baseline at week 12, and at week 24. No significant differences were found in baseline IIEF between the sildenafil citrate group and placebo group, but the mean IIEF total score at baseline was significantly higher in the sildenafil citrate group. This suggests that sildenafil citrate may be more effective than placebo in treating men with PAH, and that it may be as safe and effective as sildenafil citrate.
The investigators concluded that sildenafil citrate (Viagra®) and sildenafil citrate (Viagra®) were equally effective in improving the IIEF total score at baseline and at week 24. This is consistent with previous research that showed that sildenafil citrate was less expensive than sildenafil in improving the IIEF total score.
The study was published online in the Journal of Urology, and the authors reported that the researchers also recommended that the study be continued in patients who have BPH.
The authors of the New England Journal of Medicine concluded that sildenafil citrate (Viagra®) and sildenafil citrate (Viagra®) were equally effective in treating men with BPH or pulmonary arterial hypertension.
The authors of the New England Journal of Medicine wrote:
“Although both studies showed no differences in IIEF at baseline and at week 24, their results also did not demonstrate that sildenafil citrate is equally effective in treating men with BPH or pulmonary arterial hypertension. The results of the two trials in men with PAH were not statistically significant, and it is possible that sildenafil citrate may be as safe and effective as the combination of sildenafil citrate and sildenafil citrate.”
Sildenafil citrate (Viagra®) was compared to sildenafil citrate (Viagra®) in the study by Cheng et al.
The investigators concluded that sildenafil citrate (Viagra®) is “well tolerated and well tolerated with a low risk of side effects in patients with erectile dysfunction who are evaluated for the presence of BPH or pulmonary arterial hypertension.”
“However, because the sildenafil citrate and sildenafil citrate trials were conducted in men with erectile dysfunction, the results of the current trial cannot be interpreted as definitive.”
